The Kentucky Content Literacy Consortium (KCLC) consists of 23 rural middle and high schools, which are highly motivated to make changes in day to day teaching strategies and curriculum to improve literacy instruction and performance for middle and high school students.  Participating schools will implement two complementary literacy initiatives: Collaborative Model for Content Literacy and Kansas Learning Strategies Curriculum intervention model.

The Danville Schools are the primary manager and fiscal agent for the striving readers project.  The Consortium consists of 7 school districts involving 23 middle and high schools and partnerships with the University of Kentucky, the University of Louisville, the Collaborative for Teaching and Learning, the US Department of Education and the Kentucky Department of Education.

The grant will be  used in two ways:  to develop and implement an effective school-wide literacy model at the high school and middle school levels that helps students master high level content in all disciplines; and to provide intervention measures for struggling readers. The grant will provide teacher training at both the middle school and high school to integrate enhanced literacy instruction across the curriculum.  This initiative will also implement intensive targeted interventions for struggling students and provide a reading coach for both the middle school and the high school staffs.
